In the Shadow of No Towers is a book of “comix” (more intellectual comic strips) written and drawn by Art Spiegelman. I am remembering Sunday, September 9th. After Maus, Spiegelman worked for The New Yorker for over ten years, quitting in early 2002 after the September 11th attacks to work on a series of broadsheets entitled In the Shadow of No Towers. When I think of September 11th, 2001, I am thinking more of the days just before it. Art Spiegelman, In the Shadow of No Towers (New York: Pantheon, 2004). In no sense of the word a novel, Spiegelman's graphic memoir describes the trauma of witnessing the Twin Towers' destruction. So Art Spiegelman used IN THE SHADOW OF NO TOWERS as a sort of sequential art diary of his reactions to 9/11 and the World Trade Center attacks. The resulting book, “In the Shadow of No Towers,” (Pantheon, $20), is a brilliant, chaotic work, where Spiegelman's 24 large cardboard-backed panels take autobiographical events of Sept. I'm talking here about being a child of my time. The event will also showcase some of Spiegelman's most recent work, such as the striking In The Shadow of No Towers that the artist created in response to 9/11.
